KANALCOIN NEWS – The United States Department of Agriculture (US) is rumored to be using new technology in the production process of the organic farming industry. The US Department of Agriculture plans to use blockchain technology to trace its supply chain of organic products.
Through the United States Department of Agriculture’s Agriculture Marketing Service (AMS), the corporate agency made a statement about the supply chain technology they will use..
The United States Department of Agriculture said the government agency in charge of agriculture matters wanted an electronic tracking system. One of them is digital ledger technology (DLT).
This is because the digital ledger of blockchain technology will play an important role in the tracking process of their organic product supply chain.
“DLT can provide secure, verifiable, transparent, and near real-time tracking at the item level in complex supply chains,” said a representative for the United States Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Services.
“Critically, DLT can also protect confidential business information and trade secret information by automatically limiting sensitive information to authorized entities,” said a representative for the United States Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Services.
However, the US Department of Agriculture acknowledges that implementing this is not an easy thing. The United States Department of Agriculture recognizes that leveraging emerging technologies, such as DLT, will take time.
Additionally, additional development of blockchain ledger technology, or DLT, before the system can be implemented in the organic food industry will be costly and time-consuming for the United States Department of Agriculture.
“for the widespread adoption of electronic tracking systems including inadequate access to technology and connectivity in rural areas, acceptance of universal electronic standards (interoperability), and distribution of costs,” said the United States Department of Agriculture representative.
To carry out the blockchain technology project as a tracer of the organic product supply chain, the United States Department of Agriculture did not specify the name of the blockchain technology to be used.
However, the United States Department of Agriculture clearly named several companies as pilots in implementing blockchain technology in their production supply chains.
Some of them, namely Walmart, are using blockchain technology for supply chain tracking for mango and pork products. There is also the name of a Swiss-based multinational company, Nestle, which is using blockchain technology for their dairy product supply chain.
In addition, there is also a seafood company based in the United States, Bumble Bee Foods, using blockchain technology to monitor the supply chain of yellowfin tuna from Indonesia.
If individuals or companies want to follow the supply chain technology that will be used by the United States Department of Agriculture, then they do not need to seek certification from the United States Department.
