Filecoin and Lockheed Martin Test Blockchain in Space

Filecoin Foundation and Lockheed Martin successfully launched a test using IPFS technology in space. This marks a significant milestone in decentralized protocols being used beyond Earth, indicating potential shifts in space communications.

Marta Belcher, President of Filecoin Foundation, highlighted the benefit of data retrieval from the nearest source, stating:

“From the beginning, IPFS was envisioned as a technology that can enable networking across ‘interplanetary’ distances … Today’s centralized internet model doesn’t work in space… with IPFS, data is identified by what it is rather than where it is… content is retrieved from wherever is closest, rather than always being retrieved from a particular server.”

Meanwhile, Joe Landon from Lockheed expressed the need for technologies supporting permanent space presence.

This venture emphasizes a strategic collaboration rather than immediate financial gains. FIL tokens may see increased interest due to enhanced protocol visibility, even if immediate price changes are not expected.

Although no direct investments were disclosed, the technological progress aligns with interplanetary communications means. FIL could benefit from added attention, driving long-term interest in decentralized storage’s capacity.
