By 2026, he recognized that this compromise created a deeper risk. In the real world P2P networks go down. RPC services disappear. Validators and stakers become concentrated. Censorship happens as seen with Tornado Cash. When this occurs users are told to trust the infrastructure or call the developers.

Whoever users must rely on in a crisis becomes the true authority. If Ethereum depends on developers or service providers to rescue users then those actors become political and legal points of control.

What is the “Mountain Man’s Cabin”?

The Mountain Man’s Cabin is Vitalik’s metaphor for a permanent fallback that allows users to verify and use Ethereum directly when all infrastructure fails.

The cabin is not meant to replace normal usage. Most people will continue to use wallets, RPCs, and applications. The cabin exists so that when these tools break or censor users they can still reach the blockchain.

Historically Ethereum faced a tradeoff. Either keep blocks small so users could verify everything or grow the network and force users to trust infrastructure.

ZK SNARKs break this tradeoff. One prover can execute the full Ethereum state transition and generate a cryptographic proof. Every other user can verify that proof in milliseconds even on low powered devices.

Vitalik Buterin compares ZK SNARKs to a pill that cures all diseases because it provides the benefits of both scalability and self verification without the old costs.

He also notes two remaining caveats. Block building centralization and data bandwidth still matter. ZK does not solve everything but it removes the core security tradeoff.

Why Merkle roots alone are no longer enough

Merkle roots only prove that data exists in a block. They do not prove that the data is correct.

Light clients today verify Merkle proofs against state roots published by validators. This relies on the honest majority assumption. If most validators are honest the state is correct. If they collude they can publish a false state that still verifies.

Merkle trees also do not prove that balances followed Ethereum rules. They only prove that values were stored. ZK SNARKs replace this with validity proofs that show the entire state was produced by correctly executing the protocol. This removes the need to trust validator majorities.

Self verification removes the choke points where censorship happens. Censorship becomes expensive, visible, and hard to coordinate.
