Dunamu, the South Korean operator of the Upbit exchange, has entered a strategic cooperation with Visa focused on stablecoin payments and global remittances, a tie-up that puts one of Asia’s largest crypto companies alongside a global card network in the race to build cross-border digital-asset rails.
The cooperation was reported by Korea Economic Daily, which framed the agreement around stablecoin-based payments and international money transfers. For a company best known in the region through Upbit, the move signals Dunamu’s ambition to extend beyond exchange trading into payments infrastructure. Upbit remains a reference point for retail traders across Southeast Asia who watch Korean market flows closely.
Why Stablecoins and Remittances Are the Stated Focus
Stablecoins are dollar- or fiat-pegged tokens designed to move value quickly and cheaply across borders, which makes them a natural fit for settlement between exchanges, banks, and payment networks. Visa has been building toward this use case, describing its own stablecoin platform for minting, moving, and managing fiat-backed tokens.
Remittances are the second stated pillar, and they are a major real-world crypto payments use case in Southeast Asia, where the Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam count remittances among their largest sources of household income. Faster, lower-cost transfers are the clearest practical benefit a stablecoin corridor could offer these markets.
The specific implementation details, including which stablecoin or stablecoins would be used and how settlement would flow between the two firms, have not yet been disclosed. Readers should treat the announced scope as intent rather than a live product.
What the Tie-Up Could Mean for Regional Exchanges
A cooperation between a large crypto operator and a global card network is inherently significant to market watchers because it points toward mainstream payment relevance for digital assets. Visa’s parallel work on an open stablecoin standard suggests card networks increasingly see fiat-backed tokens as payment infrastructure rather than speculative instruments.
Dunamu has been widening its footprint beyond spot trading. It ran a stablecoin proof-of-concept that fed into GiwaChain adoption after a Hana–Dunamu PoC, and its ownership picture shifted after Naver’s acquisition reshaped Upbit’s corporate structure. A Visa relationship extends that infrastructure push into cross-border payments.
The direction also echoes moves elsewhere in the industry. Visa recently joined a MAS-backed stablecoin settlement test in Singapore, while consumer-side integrations advance through efforts such as Samsung Wallet adding USDC support. Together these point to a build-out of stablecoin payment plumbing across Asian markets.
For ASEAN exchanges and payment firms, the practical questions are whether such corridors reduce remittance costs for the region’s roughly 700 million people and how local regulators, from Bank Indonesia to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, treat stablecoin settlement. Those answers, and the still-undisclosed terms of the Dunamu–Visa cooperation, will determine its real impact.
